Queensland Higher Level Apprenticeship Pilot Program Case Study

Being in North Queensland was no barrier to TEi Services General Manager Richard Parker’s intent for the business to be involved in the Queensland Industry 4.0 Higher Apprenticeship Pilot program. In fact, the Northern location helps drive them to seek out opportunities to stay competitive in their field. TEi was first in to provide formal nominations of interest for their employees, Shaun Silver and Donnelly Madden to get involved. 

TEi Services is a manufacturing, engineering and construction company that has operated over 50 years. From humble beginnings in a small jobbing shop, it now delivers a diverse range of engineered solutions including architectural structural projects through to industrial warehouses, complex mechanical agriculture and transport assets, government and mining capital infrastructure and mineral processing equipment.  

Now running with around 50 employees, TEi already has a regular intake of apprentices, each year offering new places mainly for engineering trades for fabrication, fitting and machining. The business has also offered Engineering Cadetships when suitable so it was not missing the chance to capitalise on the team’s enthusiasm to take on skills in advanced digital technologies aimed at increasing the business’ Industry 4.0 capabilities in automation and digitalisation of processes including robotic welding and 3D metal printing.         

Shaun is a Fitter and Turner with 7 years post trade experience who enjoys his fine CNC work and coding tasks for maximum efficiency. He is keen to develop his skills further in the pre-manufacture stages in design and setting up for more advanced processes.  

Donnelly is a Leading Hand Boilermaker hoping to advance his knowledge of digitalised systems so he can troubleshoot issues and take on more in-house technical responsibilities for implementing and leading production system improvements, including LEAN processes.

The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) is continuing the national rollout of the Industry 4.0 Higher Apprenticeship Pilot programs. Project Officer Peter Jasch has finalised 43 placements into Brisbane and Townsville based training groups allocated via Expressions of Interest from businesses. Training for the Diploma of Applied Technologies will be delivered under modified apprenticeship arrangements by TAFE QLD in partnership with Skills Lab, an RTO division of SAGE Automation.  The QLD Higher Apprenticeship Pilot program is funded by the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.
